CHAPTER SIX
CADE suddenly felt regret for the way heâd proposed to Colleen. He could tell his declaration about love worried her. And maybe it had hurt her feelings.
Women like Colleen were naive and because they were so inexperienced, they were full of romantic notions and hopes. In her case, sheâd been through a lot of hard times and she was the kind of woman who deserved to have good things come her way.
He meant to give her good things. Number one was that sheâd be close to the kids and get to help raise them. Heâd see to it she felt cared for, that sheâd never want for any material thing. Heâd be a gentle, considerate husband and heâd give her the best.
Heâd be so good to her that she wouldnât notice if he never said all the pretty words. Sheâd be content with everything else because heâd make sure of it. Sheâd have a small piece of his heartâhell, she did already because he liked herâbut not so big a piece that she could use it to make a fool of him. No woman would ever do that. Heâd never give any female that power, not even Colleen.
This talk was fair warning, so he shouldnât regret it. Heâd meant to get them started the way he planned for things between them to go. The only way heâd allow his marriage to go: a common sense marriage with clear boundaries.
Colleen looked up at him then and he was again struck by the sadness and mystery in her eyes. And now the anxiety.
âYou said you wanted me to think about this,â she told him. âI will, but things are still notâ¦resolved with Beau.â
This was what had made him trust her from the first, that she kept putting the kidsâ feelings ahead of her own.
âAnd,â she began again, then stopped. Now the sad mystery in her pretty eyes seemed stronger suddenly, and her gaze wavered a little. He caught a glimmer of what was coming. âAnd, I have lots ofâ¦limits.â
âLike what?â Heâd known she would bring those up, he could have bet money. This was also part of the reason heâd changed his mind about marriage. Because Colleen always seemed determined to tell him everything she thought was fair for him to know.
âI canât keep up with active children right now. Itâll take time before Iâm fully recovered, and I canât tell you precisely when that will be. Thereâs a possibility I wonât ever recover one hundred percent. I canât do complicated math yet, Iâm more emotional, and so far, I canât even tie my shoes. Those things especially, I canât guarantee. And I haveâ¦scars.â Her gaze shied slightly from his before she forced it back. âLots of those.â
He could tell from the anxiety in her eyes that she was deeply worried about those things, that it was important to her that she confess it all. As if a list like that might make him change his mind.
He should have been offended that she thought him that shallow, but he was touched that she was honest enough to risk it.
